Description

The history of the railroad is the history of American commerce… and candy. Without the railroad, Americans would never have experienced iconic candies such as the Hershey bar or nostalgic treats such as Luden’s. On Saturday, June 23rd, True Treats Candy in Harpers Ferry will celebrate the connection of railroads and sweets with a free tasting of candies enjoyed by passengers and railroad workers alike.

According to True Treats founder Susan Benjamin, “Our tasting will be a full-fledged experience for visitors with a display of historic pieces from the railroad, old time dining car menus, and recipes from Pullman train chefs among others. Our staff, always, will function as docents, giving samples and telling the stories that go with them. We’ll also have a variety of old-time train-related items for sale, such as tin trains.”

Among the railroad-related samples visitors will enjoy:

-      Wilbur Buds
-      Candied rose petals
-      Sugar-coated licorice
-      Hershey almond candy bars
-      Pre-processed cane sugar
-      Peter’s chocolate

...with a silent movie showing afterwards.
