John Brown's Body

John Brown
John Brown.
The Harpers Ferry Foundation and the Town of Harpers Ferry are pleased to present the play John Brown’s Body with performances in historic Harpers Ferry and Shepherdstown, WV in the Fall of 2009 as a part of the commemoration of the 150th anniversary of the John Brown Raid in Harpers Ferry and the upcoming Sesquicentennial of the American Civil War. The play is directed by Joe Yates with a cast of local actors, musicians, and current and former students from Shepherd University.

Wow! I am just back from Camp Hill-Wesley Methodist Church in Harpers Ferry, and I am in awe of what Joe Yates of Shepherd University and his cast have accomplished with "John Brown's Body," the play from the poem by Stephen Vincent Benet.

This very moving play is not just about John Brown, but about the impact of the Civil War on the whole of the United States, seen through the eyes of soldiers, generals, women who stayed home, a slave, and Abraham Lincoln himself. The cast not only offers a window into the experience of all sorts and conditions of people affected by the war, but also sings the wonderful music which makes the play even more haunting and powerful. -- The Rev. Georgia DuBose, St. John’s Episcopal Church, Harpers Ferry

Advance tickets for $10 each may be purchased on this site using Paypal, or ordered by mail. You may reserve your seats as well. Tickets are limited; any unsold tickets will be available for sale before each performance. In the play, adapted from the epic poem by Stephen Vincent Benet, the great experiment, the great challenge that is the United States of America, is failing. The great icons of history, Abraham Lincoln, Robert E. Lee and John Brown, come to life. Ordinary people in the midst of extraordinary events come to life; Jack Ellyat and Clay Wingate, one Blue, one Grey; boys one day, soldiers the next. Sally Dupre and Mary Lou Wingate, the loves they left behind. Melora Villas and her father who are hiders, camp followers who have only each other. These and so many more remarkable people in this remarkable work, show us, the audience of today who inherited the challenge that is the promise of this great nation, the courage and heart required to fulfill that promise.
