Gearing Up for John Brown Sesquicentennial
- a town picnic at the Gazebo on October 17, with hot-dogs, entertainment, and reenactment
- a display on the history of Harpers Ferry in the town’s section of the refurbished train station
- an educational power-point program on Harpers Ferry in 1859 for schools, done by Mayor Addy
- the play John Brown's Body, perfomed at Camp Hill Wesley United Methodist Church in September and October and at St. Agnes Catholic Church, Shepherdstown, in November. The play, based on the Pulizer Prize-winning poem by Stephen Vincent Benet is a powerful drama about John Brown and the Civil War. It was a sellout in the 1950's directed by charles Laughton and starring Tyrone Power, Raymond Massie, and Dame Jukith Anderson. It has seldom been performed since, and never in Harpers Ferry.
